MEDICAL RESIDENTS

Resident Leadership & Wellbeing Coaching

Our program offers a practical way for residency directors to support resident wellbeing and professional growth, without adding more to their plate. Residency is demanding by design. The goal isn't to make it easy — it's to help residents stay well, effective, and professionally mature, so they can provide great patient care, navigate complex team dynamics, and graduate ready for fellowship or practice.

The Data is Not Ambiguous

  • 40–60% of residents experience burnout during training.
  • 1 in 3 residents meets criteria for depressive symptoms.
  • $141,240 is the annual cost of training a single resident — making retention and wellbeing a bottom-line issue, not just a human one.

Coaching is one of the few interventions with randomized controlled trial evidence behind it. Programs that add coaching see measurable improvements in burnout, resilience, and communication.

What the program looks like

The Resident Leadership & Wellbeing Program combines individual coaching sessions with monthly group coaching, giving residents both private support and structured peer connection throughout their training year.

Residents meet with highly trained, ICF-credentialed coaches who serve as thinking partners and guides. Coaches help residents identify patterns in their own behavior, gain new perspectives, and leave with specific, practical tools they can apply immediately.

Individual Coaching Sessions

Private sessions that help residents work through real-time challenges. Topics include professional identity and leadership development, managing communication and emotions under pressure, and navigating conflict across services and departments. Residents gain a confidential space to think, practical tools they can use right away, and stronger leadership and communication skills.

Group Coaching Sessions

Monthly facilitated sessions that normalize common struggles and solve problems in real time. Residents build cohort connection, share strategies across rotations and roles, and course-correct early — before small issues escalate. Coaches provide program directors with periodic, de-identified reports on the themes and dynamics surfacing across the cohort, offering early insight into what's affecting resident performance while fully protecting individual confidentiality.

What Residents Say

"I felt less alone knowing I was not the only one dealing with this problem."

"I'm more conscious of the impact I'm having on others."

"I feel we are more unified as a group and that I understand my colleagues better."

"It was valuable learning how to manage working with different attendings."

"I wish I'd had this intern year."

Proven Results

In a recent leadership and communication workshop with surgical residents, the response was overwhelmingly positive:

  • 97% of residents would recommend the training to other residents.
  • 4.67 / 5 average rating for overall value.
  • 95% rated the experience a 4 or 5 out of 5.

Most telling of all: without being prompted, residents repeatedly asked for the training to be expanded to incoming interns and attendings, so the whole team could share a common language for communication and leadership.

HOW YOUR PROGRAM BENEFITS

  • Clinical — Residents who can regulate their emotional responses and make better decisions under pressure.
  • Professional — Residents who understand their own communication style and appreciate differences in others.
  • Retention — Residents who feel genuinely supported and cared about by their program.
  • Cultural — Teams that communicate well, make fewer errors, and function better under intense conditions.

A NOTE ON THE APPROACH

This program is grounded in ICF-credentialed coaching methodology, emotional intelligence research, and the neuroscience of stress and performance. It's a structured, evidence-informed intervention that develops the self-awareness, communication skills, and emotional regulation that residency demands and rarely teaches.

Let's talk about how coaching could work in your program.
